Approach
How we build
Synovis exists because the software people use to organise their own lives is, mostly, not built for them. It's built to keep them engaged, to hold their data hostage, or to serve a company's roadmap. We think personal software should be shaped by different constraints.
Why personal software
The tools we reach for every day — for notes, tasks, journals, references, the small ongoing work of thinking — deserve the same care we give to the things we do inside them. Yet the category has drifted: apps chase feature parity with each other, monetise attention, and treat the user's own writing as a lever for retention.
Personal software is different. It is intimate. It touches drafts, half- formed ideas, private notes, plans that are none of anyone else's business. When it fails, it doesn't just fail as a product; it fails a practice. That's the standard we build to.
How we build
- Small scope, taken seriously. Every product is meant to do a specific job well. We would rather ship a tool that does one thing precisely than a suite that does ten things approximately.
- Local-first by default. Your data lives on your device first. Sync, when we offer it, is a feature — not a prerequisite for opening the app. Nothing should stop working because a server did.
- Open formats over lock-in. We favour plain, portable formats — Markdown, structured text, standard files — so what you write outlives the software you wrote it in.
- Cross-platform from day one. Your notes shouldn't care which device you happen to be holding. We plan for phone, desktop, and web together, not one first and the others as an afterthought.
- End-to-end encrypted where identity is involved. If sync touches personal content, the server should not be able to read it. Encryption is a design constraint, not a feature bullet.
What we don't do
- No advertising. No trackers. No third-party analytics harvesting who you are.
- No dark patterns — no engagement hooks, no manufactured urgency, no upsell interstitials.
- No feature accretion for its own sake. If something doesn't earn its place in the tool, it doesn't go in.
- No selling your data. Not to anyone. Not ever.
The point
Software you rely on every day should feel like a well-made object — the kind of thing you'd choose to keep. Synovis builds toward that standard, slowly, one small tool at a time.
